Honor your boss

1. Honor your baboYou will end up like your boss, but you must prove your worth. There are instances when your boss ask you to do menial or boring tasks, and you must not show your surly face. Your boss has more knowledge about the company. Theres a gap between you and him/her as far as experience is concerned. Work with your boss.2. Dont take your company in vainYoure a part of a religious cult. It sounds silly, but its true. You are expected to support your companys vision, even show your enthusiasm about it. And this requires more than your skills. It doesnt mean that you must reveal your patronizing side, but youll figure it out during your first year. Keep the negative views to yourself.3. Dont miss a deadlineYou can plead with the secretary (of your department) if you miss the deadline for your assignment, but the rules in the workplace are less flexible than the university. If you miss a work deadline, then it might cost your company some money. You may also lose face. There w ould be a contract. Think about it.4. Remember your weekendsGet a life outside the office. Indulge in your interests. Keep in touch with your family and friends. Unless its an urgent matter, then strive to be a balanced individual. Theres no place for burned out employees.5. Dont take too many days offIts about commitment. You must prove your worth to the company. Otherwise, your boss (and colleagues) might resent you for taking advantage of entitlements.6. Build a good relationship with your teamDont suck it up with your boss at the expense of your workmates. You might cross path with them in another company. And you may end up taking orders from them. Its important to treat every employee with respect, even showing your friendly side. They might find something in your closet. The management will know it.7. Dont worship at the reputation of a drunken manYou missed midweek boozing with your housemates, but those days were long gone. You seemed tempted to invite your colleagues to a drink on a Friday night. Likewise, theres nothing wrong if you accept an invitation from one of your workmates. But keep alcohol to a minimum. A hangover might affect your weekend plans. You could lose your focus during the following (working) week.8. Dont make a bad first impressionYou must present a professional persona on your first day in the office. And you should maintain it. Unless youre a charismatic character, then you must know that it will be hard to change the first impression. You cant tell other people about yourself, as personal matters must be kept out of the workplace. Moreover, you cant build your reputation gradually and prevail over it. This might backfire on you.9. Take every opportunityBeing too curious can be as bad as arrogance. You must distinguish yourself, which means being unafraid of taking a risk. Speak up, find a mentor, enroll in a training course.10. Dont use the companys time for your own needsDont be afraid of Big Brother, but many companies monito r your Internet use and emails. Keep it to a minimum.
